For seniors, crafting can be very important. Not only will it help them pass the time, but it will keep their hand-eye coordination up to speed. When it comes to seniors affected with dementia, sometimes participating in a familiar pastime will help them with their memories. Crocheting allows seniors who have crocheted in the past to not only keep a piece of the person they remember, but to have a tangible piece of evidence that will proves to them that they can still do it.
Crocheting, in general, can be a fun hobby. Whether you are a beginner or a senior crochet master, you need to understand the five basic types of yarn. They are known as fingering, baby, worsted weight, chunky and bulky. If you can’t tell by touch which type of yarn you need, just look at the label. Yarn labels provide all the information you will need to know.
After you get the correct yarn, you need to get a crochet hook. A crochet hook actually does have a hook at one end to catch the loops of yarn and drawing them through the stitches, which is the basic movement behind crocheting. Crochet hooks range from 2.25 mm, known as B, to 19 mm, known as S. If you are crocheting crafts such as doilies, you need a fine crochet hook known as a steel crochet hooks. Seniors may already know what type of hook they have used, especially if they’ve been crocheting for years. You will also want to pick up some knitting needles. If you are making a larger craft, like a sweater or an afghan, you will probably want to get circular knitting needles. Check your pattern for the specifics of what you will need.
