For many senior citizens the senior center is the highlight of their life. It is usually free, they have cookies and coffee and, the most important thing, a group of other seniors with whom they can play cards. They usually set four to a table and choose their game which can be euchre, poker, or pinochle. The best part of it is they get to improve their mental skills. They also get to be with friends, visit and have light refreshments. Many of the games are played for petty cash, and the cash goes toward refreshments.
Playing cards is a great activity for senior citizens since it has a mind body connection. Whether it is a foursome gathered at one senior citizen's home or a number of tables gathered at a senior center it is always a sociable event and helps keep the senior stay young at heart. For those who have difficulty seeing there are large print playing cards. For those who have difficulty holding on to their cards there are large sized heavier cards and also plastic holders to hold the cards so they may be read. It seems the most important part of playing cards is the social activity and meeting with other seniors.
Just the fact that the senior has to leave his TV set to go meet his companions to play cards or other games is a big help to his mind body connection. Any sort of physical activity gets the blood circulating and causes the brain to be active. Remember, playing cards or other games helps keep the mind active and slows aging.
