Quilting as a Hobby for Seniors

Seniors of today have always been busy. Whether they worked at home or away from home, these people stayed busy. Hobbies are often the way many seniors continue to keep themselves busy after retirement. The creation of quilts is a wonderful hobby for seniors for a number of reasons. Keeping busy is good for the entire body and the mind. Many seniors get together in one person’s home or at a senior center to work on quilts. This is a great interactive time for the participants.

As we age, some people develop disabilities such as weakening eyesight and arthritis in the hands and back. These conditions should not dissuade a senior from taking up or continuing their quilting fun. There are lighted magnifiers that can be hung around the neck or come in floor or tabletop models. These are a tremendous help for performing the stitching required in a handmade quilt. There are also special hand gloves that will help to ease arthritis pain. When quilting, your back can take a beating and this pain will not help older folks that have problems. One way to help this would be to lift the quilting table with raisers. These are four or six inch blocks that are used to raise beds or tables to an easier to use height.

Many seniors enjoy doing things for others and donating things. Often they have many items in the home or their wardrobe that would make a wonderful quilt. Many senior groups make quilts for newborn babies or people touched by cancer or other diseases.
