Bicycling For Seniors As A Hobby

More and more senior persons are bicycling as a hobby and for general health reasons. Part of the reason for this is that persons are tending to live longer and the age of 55 is considered "young" in many areas. Some have ridden the bicycle since their teenage years and some even earlier than that.

It is good to get a refresher book or course when riding as a senior. Some of the laws have changed and everyone should be up on the latest of the laws. One of these rules is that one should not ride on sidewalks. This is against the law, along with being rude and not being safe for the bicycler or the pedestrian on the sidewalk.

While riding, always look out for dangers. There are potholes in the streets and debris in the road. This could damage the bike as well as cause an accident for the rider, either with a fallen bike or by being run into by an automobile or other vehicle.

The bicycler should always use hand signals so that the motorist will know what the bicycler will be doing. Do not pedal too fast as the bicycler should always be sure to be in control.

Before beginning the ride, be sure the bicycle is in good functioning condition. After 9 p.m., or when it begins to get dark, turn on the bicycle’s lights.

Bicycling is a good hobby for the middle-aged and beyond as well as being a healthy activity both for the physical benefits it offers and the chance to get some fresh air.
