Quilting Mastery

You only have to visit a quilt exhibit to be awestruck and inspired. You will undoubtedly leave the show wondering how an individual could possess such a creative mind and execute the process from start to exquisite finish with such skillful mastery.

Quilts date back to 3400 BC. In their earliest form they were comprised of several layers of cloth. Running stitches of strong thread were used to hold the cumbersome pieces together. Originating in China and Egypt (it is assumed), quilts found their way to Europe and Japan. Quilts came to colonial America during the 1600s.

Today’s quilter has an enormous advantage over quilters of yesteryear. Advances in equipment, tools, supplies and fabrics allow quilting to be a pleasurable and fulfilling pastime. Quilting is no longer relegated to utilitarian purposes; warm bed covers, blankets, covers for drafty windows and warm clothing to insulate against the chill of harsh winters.

To fuel your imagination and get your creative juices flowing visiting quilt shows, quilt festivals, quilters’ conventions, quilters’ trade shows and art galleries are good places to see the wondrous work of skilled artisans. The internet is another great and convenient resource. There are many websites devoted to quilting. From the comfort of home you can view colorful illustrations of completed quilt projects, shop for fabric, tools, supplies and even equipment. You can also find an endless variety of quilt patterns. Some patterns are downloadable free of charge. At the click of your mouse, tutorials and complete instructions from the very simple to the intricate are available to you.
