Knitting: A Useful Hobby

Senior citizens have the time for hobbies and the luxury of choosing something they enjoy. For many women and even some men, this choice is knitting. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to do. It can be done while other activities are enjoyed. Listening to music or watching television while you knit is possible. Knitting as you go on a car trip helps pass the time on the road. You can find knitting groups that meet regularly to knit and to experiment with new patterns and wools. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about your hobby and to make new friends who have a similar interest. The fellowship of the group is refreshing, and the meeting gets the senior citizen out of his house.

The mechanics of knitting are easy and simple. Two straight needles are used for flat knitting and circular needles, or a double-pointed needle, are used for circular knitting. The size of the needles and the weight and texture of the wool used give an opportunity for variety and creativity. The pattern and the color of yarn also gives choices that determine what the finished product will be like. Knitting can be done while seated in a chair. It is ideal for those who have difficulty walking. It can also be done by the visually-impaired. Another person can read the pattern for the knitter. A magnifier can be used. The computer screen can be magnified so that patterns can be read.

Perhaps the most satisfying thing about knitting is that it can be done to help others. Friends and loved ones would enjoy scarves, gloves, hats, or throws knitted by family member. Many knit baby hats, blankets, and sweaters for newborns, especially those born to mothers who need help.
