Do not sell seniors short! The word “senior” does not mean that they have fallen off the cliff and are done with. Many seniors fall prey to the ravages of time in terms of health and financial issues. There are just as many (maybe more) seniors who, in spite of their advanced years, lead healthy, financially secure, happy, fulfilling and active lives. Activities “suitable” for those of the “golden years” group are commonly associated with sedentary hobbies (crafts such as sewing, knitting, quilting, flower arranging, painting, scrapbooking, and others). Many visualize seniors engaging in cards, checkers, chess and other such group participation at senior centers.
A hardy, vital bunch enjoy ballroom dancing, square dancing, bicycling, hiking, golfing, walking and other aerobic exercises, including snow skiing. The next time you are on the slopes at Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone, and others, watch out for the older gang. Cross-country skiing is also very popular. Ski resorts in the United States and Canada offer attractive discount packages to seniors that include lodging, meals, lift tickets and more.
Snow skiing, downhill or cross-country, is a great aerobic exercise. It offers many health benefits to people of all ages. It builds cardiovascular endurance, increased bone density, and improved lung function. Snow skiing is an excellent way to burn calories as an aid to weight control and it improves balance. All of these factors affect quality of life for seniors in a very positive way. Physical activity and positive attitudes help keep seniors agile, healthy and happy.
