The Joy of Reading for Seniors

Reading is an important aspect of human growth. It teaches life's values. It is a great way to learn about a wide variety of subjects. It can be a wonderful escape to the world of fantasy. For senior citizens, reading can be especially helpful and joyful. Though the body slows down, the mind often does not. Even in when seniors suffer from dementia and other age-related diseases, loved ones can help by reading to the patients.

Reading fills up new leisure time by keeping the mind active. This is true whether the topics are fiction or non-fiction. Thinking about and assessing reading material reminds seniors that they are still active in the most important way of all. Human beings possess intellects and wills, and reading is a powerful way to exercise those gifts. Reading can also be a group project. The discussion of material read is a way to build relationships, keep communication clear and strong and build firm opinions. This can also generate a willingness to have an open mind and learn from others. Libraries are an excellent source for books and magazines. Book clubs can also be very helpful.

Many seniors are not able, physically or financially, to travel extensively. Reading makes it possible for them to make unlimited journeys of the mind. For seniors who do have more mobility, reading can still be an important ongoing project for personal growth and fulfillment. When people challenge their minds and explore the world through their minds, they find themselves with not just an outlet but a source of happiness and joy.
