Hobbies can do more than keep seniors entertained; they can also help to keep them physically, mentally and socially active. Hobbies like golfing, tennis or swimming keep seniors physically challenged and socially engaged. Seniors can join walking, running and biking clubs to enjoy these activities in the company of others. Gardening is both physically and creatively challenging, allowing seniors to surround themselves with beauty and grow fresh organic herbs and vegetables, if they so choose.
There are all kinds of community activities that seniors can explore; theater groups and book clubs, travel groups and sewing circles, painting or cooking classes. Most local newspapers will have listings of community activities, or seniors can check with local senior centers. Brochures for continuing education classes might also provide some ideas.
Activities like learning a new language or skill help to keep the mind sharp. So do word puzzles and games, sudoku and logic puzzles. These puzzles can be found in large print versions for those who have difficulty seeing. Jigsaw puzzles can also help to maintain focus and dexterity.
Socializing with others helps to stave off feelings of loneliness and depression. Some seniors find a great deal of personal
satisfaction in serving others. Seek out volunteer activities in your community through your church, local newspaper, city hall or senior center.
Whatever kind of activity you choose to fill your time, it should be something you enjoy and look forward to doing. Don't be afraid to try new things. It'll help keep you young at heart.
