Sewing as a Senior Hobby

Many of today’s seniors learned to sew in their youth. Times were different four or five decades ago and young girls were expected to learn the art of sewing. They would need this skill in order to create clothing and household items. In addition, they would be expected to know a large number of handicraft skills so they were able to perform their female duties.

Hobbies tend to help to keep a senior citizen’s minds and hands active. Whether or not the women maintained their sewing skills in top form throughout their lives it would not take long for them to restore the art of sewing to their enjoyed hobbies. The ability to sew will provide seniors with a wonderfully appreciated way to create clothes for grandchildren. Quilting is another art of sewing that often will provide hours of enjoyment for the senior in creating a useful work of art to use or give as a gift.

Hobbies can often be transformed into added income. For many of the senior citizens this can be a most welcome addition to their budgets. With many people retiring earlier in life, or worse yet, being put out of their employment unexpectedly due to the economy, being able to put a skill such as sewing into effect is a blessing. Craft shows or selling sewn items on internet websites will supplement the senior’s income and provide activity to their mental and physical well being at the same time. Many seniors also enjoy teaching others how to sew, especially members of their family. After all, that is generally the way they learned to sew many decades before.
