Sewing as a Senior Hobby

Sewing is a great hobby for senior citizens. Sewing helps them to stay active and productive. Sewing is a great way for a senior citizen who may not get out as much as they used to pass the time, especially during the winters. Seniors can sew things for themselves or make hand made gifts for their loved ones. Hand sewn gifts are especially precious for the grand kids. Sewing can also be a way for a senior citizen to stay social after retirement.

There are often many groups especially with in churches where a group of women get together and sew items for local charities. Some groups get together and put their sewing skills together in one project to make a quilt for a VA hospital or children’s hospital. This gives older people a chance to make friends or form stronger bonds with friends they already have while doing something good for the community. Sewing gives seniors a sense of accomplishment because they put their handy work into a beautiful hand made finishes project. Some seniors may have to have lighted magnifying glasses to help them see when they sew, where others may need special gadgets to help thread the needle.

Some seniors may have to limit their sewing due to arthritic pain but sewing can also help with arthritic pain by keeping the joints in their hands and arms active to reduce stiffness and swelling. Sewing may not be for all but for those who do like it find it gives them great pleasure in having a hobby. Even if you have never sewn in your life it is never too late to learn. Once you are retired you may find that you have a lot more free time to learn a new hobby.
