Most senior citizens want to stay active both mentally and physically. They enjoy interacting with others and appreciate learning new things. Many have skills that they learned and have turned into hobbies. Knitting is one of these hobbies and requires a moderate degree of skill. Knitting is a wonderful senior hobby for a number of reasons. The senior’s hands are kept busy and flexible through use. If they were to have arthritis or other problems with their hands, the regular knitting hobby will help to reduce the pain the locked up joints can cause. Continuing to learn new patterns makes the hobby always fresh and the mind alert.
Seniors also enjoy sharing skills with others and sharing conversations. Many senior centers have days for knitting bees and the yarn used to create afghans, socks, hats and mittens are often donated for their use. This provides wonderful hobby time and keeps the seniors involved with other people. Often seniors suffer from depression, so having this hobby and interaction goes a very long way toward maintaining a stable mental condition.
Seniors also enjoy giving back to society. Many have been through good times and hard times or know people that have. Knowing how to knit allows them to craft beautiful items that are given to shelters, nurseries and senior centers. No one really knows how much these beautifully handmade items are truly appreciated in someone else’s time of need. The seniors have enjoyed applying their knitting hobby skills and everyone is a winner.
