Creating your very own garden of either flowers or vegetables can be a relaxing way to exercise as well as being proud of yourself and your successful garden. Getting out in the fresh air, working with nature and getting some sunshine makes your body feel so relaxed and less stressed. It is very therapeutic, for seniors, to use their motor skills by working in their garden. Just knowing a few tips, to prevent injury, will get you well on your way to a beautiful garden.
To avoid the bending, stretching and twisting that is involved with planting, making a raised garden, that is waist high, will prevent injury to the senior. Planting perennials that grow vertically will prevent planting again next year. Also, you can add more to your garden next year by not having to replant annuals again.
Protect your skin from the sun and insects. Wear sun screen and long clothes. A hat keeps the sun off your head so you do not get over heated. Take care of any cut, bite or injury immediately so you will not end up with an infection. Keep yourself hydrated. Only plant in the early morning or late evening. Take necessary breaks in between plantings. Wear knee pads if you do get down on the ground. Rather than carrying water to your garden, install a irrigation hose and use mulch to retain the moisture around the plant's roots. Make sure you have easy to use tools and keep them clean and in good shape so you do not have to struggle with them when you use them. A high fence and locked gate is a safe way to allow a senior, that has a memory disorder, to enjoy and create a garden of their own.
