Photography for Seniors: A Picture-Perfect Hobby

They say a picture’s worth a thousand words, and it’s true. Who’d rather hear a verbal explanation when they can view a picture that says it all? Photography is fun, easy to learn and presents an opportunity to capture special moments. People enjoy looking at photographs of friends, family and special events, and photographs make wonderful gifts.

Senior citizens have discovered photography as a hobby, and it seems to be a perfect fit. Usually on a fixed income, seniors don’t have major bucks to spend on hobbies. Today, you don’t have to pay a fortune to purchase a decent digital camera, and photographic technology proves to be beneficial for seniors due to innovations like memory cards, inexpensive prints, and the photo album websites that are now available.

Technology has also eliminated much of the annoying decision-making that photography used to present. We no longer have to decide what kind of film to purchase, there’s no waiting period to see if the pictures are good, and we don’t have to worry about throwing money out the window because we took bad pictures. With digital photography, if we don’t like the picture, we can simply delete it.

Finally, seniors and photography are a good fit because seniors have experienced enough in life to know what’s worth capturing. They have a sense for what’s memorable and are seasoned enough to know how to communicate this in a photograph.

Photography and senior citizens seem to be an excellent match, one that will produce truly memorable results.
