Senior citizens need to work out just like younger people do. One of the best ways to work out, especially for seniors, is to swim. Working out for just 45 minutes every day will help you to increase your bone density by 1 to 2%, and it will help to improve your muscle strength by 75 to 100%.
Seniors need to keep their muscles and joints moving in order to retain the elasticity in them. Swimming also provides the senior with interaction with other seniors, which is good for your mental state, while the exercise of swimming helps you retain your sense of balance and, in general, keeps you healthier.
Another benefit of swimming is the buoyancy your body attains while in the water. This takes the stress off of damaged backs, knees and legs while you are exercising. This is not quite as jarring as doing exercises on a treadmill or other type of exercise machine.
Our life expectancy is longer now than it used to be, which makes it necessary for seniors to retain as much of their health as possible, and swimming is an excellent way to do just that.
Many communities have senior swimming times at the community pool and some even have exercise programs. If you live in an apartment or mobile home community, they usually have pools where you can swim. If there is no program for seniors, you might want to discuss the possibility of starting something like that with the manager of your living facility. It would be good for you and would certainly be a drawing card for new tenants.
