Ways That Seniors Keep Their Minds Active

The old saying “Use it or lose it” can mean a lot to seniors. If they keep active mentally as well as physically they are less likely to “lose it.” It is true that if you don’t use it you can lose it. Just think about some of the normal activities that people do daily. If you stop doing those activities for long periods of time, then you might have to learn all over again how to do it. If you keep doing the same normal activities daily and don’t stop then you won’t lose that capability.

There are some activities that people can’t do as they get older because of physical limitations, but as far as mental limitations go seniors can keep their minds active by doing many different things. Playing cards, scrabble, other board games, video games, reading and just spending time with other people talking will help keep your mind active.

Lack of companionship is one of the biggest deterrents of keeping your mind active. If you are spending all of your time alone with no companions and nothing to do to stimulate your mind, you will find that you will lose a lot of mind activity. Keeping the mind active will also help fight against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Being socially active helps keep the mind active and also increases feelings of self worth.

Staying active whether physically or mentally is something that everyone should strive to do. It will be better for seniors and their friends and family members to see that they are doing well and stay healthy.
