Senior Citizens Staying Active

Experts all agree that the very best thing for people as they grow older is to stay active. Keep your body active by walking, swimming, bike riding or working out. Keep your mind active by becoming involved with other people -- mentoring children, being a companion for other seniors who may be shut in, or joining organizations that relate to your hobbies.

Remaining active has a positive influence on your balance, strength, flexibility and endurance. Physical exercise has been known to bring back some of these functions that have been lost over the years.

There are lots of places that can use volunteers. Check your local hospitals, libraries and even churches. These places usually operate on a tight budget and volunteers are a welcome commodity.
Your local senior citizen center needs volunteers to help serve meals or deliver meals, so check it out.

You also might want to check into some formal organizations such as Foster Grandparents program, Family Friends or Senior Companions. Each of these use volunteers and are glad to get them. Training is offered, and in some instances meals and transportation might be provided.

Another volunteering possibility is in our National Parks. If you have an interest in history you might become a docent. This one sounds like it would be a lot of fun, but check it out early, because I bet they fill their volunteer positions quickly. So remember, if you are approaching that time of your life when you may be considered “older”, keep active both physically and mentally, it will help you to live longer.
