Gardening is a wonderful pass time for seniors. There might be some physical limitations that need to be considered, but by changing and adapting a few things, it can be rewarding for everyone. Gardening increases the level of activity and maintains mobility. It encourages all motor skills, walking, bending and reaching. Through the activity it helps prevent osteoporosis, reduces stress and increases relaxation. If a vegetable garden is planted it will provide nutritious food, which will add a healthy diet to the list of benefits as well.
If there isn’t a garden area available, seniors could do a container garden. Items needed are a whiskey barrel or a laundry basket with holes in the bottom. The idea behind this garden is to grow the things you want on a pizza. Plant a tomato in the center, onions in a circle around the tomato and basil on the outside. A “salsa” garden with tomatoes, onions, hot peppers, and cilantro is another idea.
Planting wildflowers in a container on a patio or under grow lights is a colorful idea. Watching the plants grow and mature is fascinating and enjoyable. If you are considering flower gardens, try to plant flowers that will bloom in all seasons. The wild flowers will be rampant with color during spring and summer. Mums and carnations will carry the color into autumn and even early winter. In colder climates, when the growing season is done, seniors can watch birds, squirrels, and chipmunks dine on the seeds left in the garden. A garden that can be watched in all seasons always has something growing.
