Did you learn to sew in your youth, but never had time for it as an adult? Have you always wanted to learn sewing, but never found the time? Many seniors have taken up sewing as a hobby and are finding it to be rewarding and enjoyable. Senior Stitchers is a sewing and craftwork group based in Parkersburg, West Virginia and founded by June Roberts. The group meets once a week at a Volunteer Action Center, where they create sewing and craft products for others around the world.
June Roberts singlehandedly recruited over 20 senior volunteers who needed something to do and wanted to give back to the community. According to June, “There are a lot of people out there who are just lonesome and they need to do something. Here they can come and sew and give back. It’s our desire to give back to the community. We believe we can still serve others. We still have much to give, and our hearts go out to the children and the elderly in need.” Some of the items they create include aprons for Alzheimer’s patients and head gear for cancer patients.
Another group, the RSVP Sewers from a Baptist Church in the same area, has joined with Senior Stitchers to create blankets and other things for people in need. The Senior Center Sewing Circle of Carroll County, GA is a group of volunteers who make rugs, tote bags, baby comforts and other items for the needy.
Other senior sewers have become successful entrepreneurs. At 64, Emoke Forman owns “Atlantic Coast Embroidery and Screen-printing,” in Southampton, NY. JoAnne Bell calls herself the Sewing Senior and belongs to the “New York Crafters Group” on Yahoo. According to her website, JoAnne creates embroidered gifts and does craft shows.
