There are many things seniors can do and enjoy, and sewing is one of them. Sewing can be very therapeutic as well as rewarding. If you've ever sewn or ever wanted to sew, this is a good hobby to do later in life. There are so many different types of sewing. Even if you don't have access to a sewing machine, you can still sew.
Senior sewing groups are sprouting up all over. A local senior center is a good place to go to meet other seniors, and some of them have sewing classes, or quilting bees. What a better way to make friends than to share a common interest?
There are different charitable organizations that you can sew for. Hospitals need infant wear for preemies. Children's hospitals can use stuffed animals and baby blankets that could all be made by seniors. Not only would you have the satisfaction of creating something together with friends, but the joy of helping someone else. There are many foreign mission organizations that need children's clothing. There is no greater satisfaction than helping a child that has few resources. There are hospice centers in almost every city that can use items for their patients. For example, lap throws made of fleece are an easy project.
If you like to sew as a group, you can get together with other interested seniors and make a quilt together. Seniors have taken an interest in our injured soldiers from the Iraq war, and are making quilts for them. So far over 17,000 quilts have been donated to our wounded veterans.
