Swimming For Seniors

Swimming is not just a sport, it is part of an aerobic exercise considered to be Type II category. Type II category consists of a 30min moderately vigorous workout done at least three times a week. Swimming is an effect type of workout that is great for senior citizens.

Many swimming activities normally occur at a recreation center with a variety of days and times to accommodate the schedule of seniors. Price ranges vary depending on the recreation center or gym. The functionality and elasticity is one of the benefits of senior swimming to help build strong joints that are not used as often as we age and keep a strong heart to circulate blood flow. Swimming does not put any stress on the joints and makes it easy to take up as a sport or aerobic exercise. Another name for swimming is called "water fitness."

One of the great accommodations of taking up swimming as a hobby is the fact that you can swim anytime during the year because swimming is available all year long and is low impact. Another accommodation is that swimming can be done either as a group where seniors get a chance to also meet and socialize with other seniors, or in a one on one with a swim instructor.

There a couple of ways senior citizens can get information to their local recreation center or gym to sign up for senior swimming. You can locate a local recreation center through your local yellow pages or internet search "senior swimming."
