Quilting is a process whereby layers of materials are joined together to form one end product. Due to the incorporation of individual items that perform different functions, layering allows for the final product to be better than the individual items would be alone.
Though not all quilts are pieced, piecing is the beginning of the process. Piecing gathers the different blocks used to showcase our memories. These may be pieces from old blankets used on cold nights, shirts tattered from daily toil, swatches from the remains of special dresses and so much more. These different pieces, picked from the days of our lives, harbor memories that hold us together as a family. Each time we look at the separate swatches, a different memory is renewed.
Through it all a layer of caring, much like the layer of batting used to retain heat, warming an austere world. Also called the backing, it could be considered the substance that gave your life dimension.
Through it all, the stitches of love that quilted it all together kept things from coming apart. The process of quilting can show the artist and the recipient how their lives are inextricably bound together. The removal of even one piece changes the entire product, as the changing of one event changes our entire life.
Not all of the show pieces will be pretty! They will not all be of equal strength or texture! But they are all a part of the whole, a unique and complex compilation of life.
