Senior Hobbies: Drawing, Painting and other Crafts

We work all our lives and have little time for ourselves. Things that we’d love to be doing get put on the back burner as we concern ourselves with the tasks before us: earning a living, keeping up our homes and raising our children. Once the children are grown and retirement is a reality, it sometimes takes a while to restructure our lives so that we can actually do those things we enjoy. Hobbies, like other endeavors in life, bring us joy relative to the amount of time we put into them.

Many seniors have several hobbies to occupy their time, but some decide to focus their energy on one or two things they’ve felt drawn to all their lives, like painting or photography. As these budding artists begin honing their skills, some become exceptional in their craft.  Barica Kosokovic is in her nineties and resides in Michigan. She recently exhibited some of her artwork at the Absolute Gallery in Lansing as part of an art show called “Nonagenarians: Artwork of Life.” Barica was born in Croatia and came to the U.S. in the mid-1950s. Her art depicts the Croatian village she knew as a child. She uses lots of bright primary colors in her paintings and drawings.

If you’re a senior citizen who draws, paints, or whose hobby is doing arts and crafts of any type, you may be surprised at all the places your art may be welcomed. Most cities and towns in the U.S. have art centers with regular art exhibits and many welcome amateur artists. For instance, the Pendleton Center for the Arts in Oregon invites unknown artists to submit their work for exhibition/sales. Who knows? You may turn your enjoyable hobby into a lucrative business.
